What Is SIP? Systematic Investment Plan Explained

A SIP invests a fixed amount in a mutual fund at regular intervals. How it works, rupee-cost averaging, step-up SIPs and common mistakes.

How a SIP works

A systematic investment plan (SIP) invests a fixed amount — say ₹5,000 — in a mutual fund scheme every month (or week/quarter) through an auto-debit mandate. Each instalment buys units at that day's NAV.

Rupee-cost averaging

Because the amount is fixed, you buy more units when NAV is low and fewer when it is high. Over time this averages your purchase cost and removes the need to time the market. It does not guarantee profit or protect against losses in a falling market.

Example

Month Invested NAV Units
1 ₹5,000 ₹50 100.0
2 ₹5,000 ₹40 125.0
3 ₹5,000 ₹62.5 80.0
Total ₹15,000 305.0

Average cost per unit = ₹15,000 ÷ 305 ≈ ₹49.18, lower than the simple average NAV of ₹50.83.

Types of SIP

  • Regular SIP – fixed amount, fixed interval.
  • Step-up (top-up) SIP – the amount increases periodically, e.g. 10% a year.
  • Flexible SIP – the amount can be changed.
  • SIP in ETFs/stocks – some brokers offer recurring purchases of ETFs or shares.

Common mistakes

  • Stopping SIPs during market falls — which is when averaging helps most.
  • Choosing funds based only on recent returns.
  • Too many overlapping funds.
  • Using equity SIPs for short-term goals.

Estimate your SIP

Frequently asked questions

Can I stop a SIP anytime?

Yes. Most SIPs can be paused or cancelled without penalty. Exit loads apply only on redemption within the specified period, not on stopping instalments.

Is SIP better than lump sum?

Neither is always better. SIP suits regular income and reduces timing risk; a lump sum invested early can do better in rising markets but carries more timing risk.
